Gitanas Nausėda underlined Lithuania’s strong commitment to pursue ambitious transformation together with other EU member states as well as global climate change goals. According to the President, energy independence and the transition to renewable energy were Lithuania’s strategic goal, which was achieved thanks to resolute and focused decisions. The Head of State underlined that Lithuania will continue to pursue ambitious goals in the fields of green energy and climate change.
By 2030, Lithuania is going to shift from a net importer of electricity to a self-sufficient green energy producer and will aim to increase the production of renewable electricity by almost sevenfold, the President pointed out.
“Lithuania intends to use excess renewable electricity capacities to produce green hydrogen and to address energy efficiency issues through new ambitious plans,” President Gitanas Nausėda underlined.
The Head of State stressed that Lithuania’s overall goal is to achieve a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and to become climate-neutral by 2050.
The President called for stopping “ecocide” and focusing efforts on mitigating the consequences of harmful actions already taken. According to the Lithuanian leader, Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine has caused enormous damage to the environment, and the aggressor’s actions are incompatible with international law and go against the world’s joint efforts to stop climate change.
Gitanas Nausėda urged the world leaders to approve Global 2030 Renewables and Energy Efficiency targets and to work together as one team to deal with the challenges facing the planet.
