During the meeting, Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Lithuania is a staunch supporter of Georgia’s European integration. The President underlined that in order to obtain the status of a candidate country for EU membership, Georgia needs to demonstrate progress in reforms and the implementation of the European Commission’s recommendations, in particular on issues such as political depolarization of society, judicial reforms, de-oligarchization, and freedom of the press. According to the Lithuanian leader, it is also important for Georgia to synchronize its geopolitical stance with the EU foreign policy priorities and to consistently support EU’s policy of sanctions against the aggressor Russia.
“Georgian society’s support for the country’s European future is very clear. I hope that your country will be led by pro-Western geopolitical decisions and a commitment to European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Georgia’s future now depends on its ability to stay focused in its reform efforts and to uphold European values, namely, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law,” Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.
The Head of State noted that Lithuania supports Georgia’s Euro-integration process together with Ukraine and Moldova and urged Georgia not to lose the historic opportunity to become the EU candidate country.
