The Lithuanian and Polish leaders discussed the implementation of the Vilnius NATO Summit decisions, the security situation in the region and bilateral cooperation.
The President stressed that the recent NATO Summit and its decisions demonstrated the transatlantic community’s unity and determination to defend the values of the free world, strengthen security in the entire Euro-Atlantic area and support Ukraine to victory. “We must work together to ensure that Ukraine’s goals of Euro-Atlantic integration are achieved as soon as possible,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda noted that the decisions taken in Vilnius on securing NATO’s eastern flank were no less important: new generation regional defense plans were approved and air and missile defense was strengthened, with a focus on the rotational model in our region. “Although the agreed plans are very important, they alone will not deter the aggressor, and we must continue to work together on a systematic basis to implement them and make them effective as early as possible,” the President said.
The two leaders also discussed their common position on Ukraine’s accession negotiations with the EU, which are expected to begin this year, the use of Russia’s frozen public and private assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction, the strengthening of sanctions against Russia and Belarus, and ways to prevent their circumvention. The Presidents agreed to continue working towards establishing a special international tribunal to hold Russia accountable for crimes of war and aggression. The Lithuanian and Polish leaders discussed bilateral economic cooperation and joint infrastructure projects. According to the President, it is essential to speed up the implementation of the Rail Baltica project, which will create a rail link between the Baltic States, Poland and the EU as a whole, help to strengthen the European North-South transport axis and contribute to ensuring military mobility.
