The President and the newly appointed Ambassador discussed the prospects of economic, political and cultural cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary.
The meeting also focused on the geopolitical and security situation in the region. Gitanas Nausėda stressed the need to maintain and strengthen support for Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor, to expand sanctions on Russia and Belarus, and to demand that Russia be held accountable for its crimes of aggression. The President noted that it is also necessary to set ambitious goals for EU enlargement, to consolidate bilateral relations in defense and security through participation in NATO’s air policing missions and military exercises.
According to the President, economic cooperation with Hungary has considerable potential, and emphasis should be placed on increasing exports of Lithuanian goods and services, promoting cooperation in the security and defense industries, and integrating Lithuanian companies into supply chains through the development of automotive capacities in Hungary and joint military production projects.
Gitanas Nausėda pointed out that the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Hungary, which will be celebrated next year, is an excellent opportunity to raise Lithuania's profile, introduce Lithuanian culture and art and work together in promoting historical memory, especially in the context of Lithuania’s and Hungary’s resistance against the Soviet occupation.
The President and the Ambassador also discussed scientific and academic cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary and the need to continue supporting Lithuanian language studies as a secondary subject at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
