The two presidents discussed the strengthening of bilateral cooperation across political, economic, cultural, educational, and scientific areas, as well as the implementation of regional infrastructure projects.
“We enjoy excellent political, economic, cultural and, above all, people-to-people contacts between our countries and societies. We are bound by the Baltic cultural tradition, which we must continue. We have agreed to continue providing and mobilizing support for Ukraine in its fight, to support civil society in Belarus, to counter illegal migration flows together, and to preserve our historical memory. Lithuania and Latvia are not only good neighbors and allies, but also fraternal nations, and we are truly proud of that,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda underlined that the time has come to decide on accelerating the synchronization of electricity grids with Continental Europe.
“This is a reality defined by the geopolitical situation. Lithuania is ready for this. The latest studies clearly show that all three Baltic countries can safely disconnect from the BRELL network soon. Therefore, I urge the Latvian authorities to take the necessary steps and make the required decisions to enable the process of speeding up synchronization,” the President said.
The Lithuanian and Latvian leaders also focused on the security and defense situation in the region, concrete steps to implement the decisions made at the Vilnius NATO Summit, support for Ukraine, Russia’s accountability for war crimes and the crime of aggression, as well as sanctions against the aggressor Russia, and its satellite Belarus.
“We need to toughen sanctions against the aggressor Russia, avoiding unjustified derogations. We need to start working on the 12th package of sanctions and take the necessary decisions on using Russia’s frozen assets to rebuild Ukraine. Finally, we need to start negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership by the end of the year,” the President said.
