“We value the excellent bilateral relations between Lithuania and Canada, and we welcome Canada’s decision to open an embassy in Vilnius. This will open up new opportunities to further strengthen our ties and expand our bilateral agenda,” the President pointed out.
Gitanas Nausėda thanked Canada for its important contribution to strengthening the security of the Baltic region by leading the NATO forward presence battlegroup in Latvia and deploying troops to the NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius.
The President also underlined his appreciation for Canada’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s military aggression. “Canada’s long-term military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine is very important. We must remain united and resolute, and put an end to Russia’s aggression as soon as possible, as well as integrate Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic security architecture,” the Lithuanian leader underlined. The President welcomed Canada’s decision to adopt amendments to its national legislation on the use of the assets of the Russian regime and oligarchs for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
During the meeting, the President also welcomed the growing trade and economic relations between Lithuania and Canada. According to Gitanas Nausėda, there is potential to further strengthen them, especially in high value-added sectors, food exports, life sciences, and agriculture. Lithuania also seeks to further increase security and defense cooperation by developing start-up ecosystem initiatives.
