President Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Germany plays a key role both in supporting Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and ensuring the security of the region. Germany’s long-term commitment to Lithuania’s security is significant for the entire eastern flank of the Alliance. The President pointed out that Lithuania is actively investing in the development of its military infrastructure to create the necessary conditions for hosting a German brigade on its territory.
“For its part, Lithuania is ready to do everything it can to make German troops feel at home on our soil. Allied forces are indispensable for Lithuania’s security and defense. We need to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO. This frontline needs to be very strong, with elements of air and missile defense and a greater presence of allied forces in the region,” the President said.
The two presidents also discussed support for Ukraine. The Lithuanian leader stressed that the allied military, political, diplomatic, and financial support is vital for Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor. According to the President, it is necessary to support Ukraine until Russia is defeated.
The President also stressed the need to increase pressure on Russia: to continue the EU’s effective sanctions policy and to demand that the Kremlin regime be held accountable for its crimes of war and aggression. Gitanas Nausėda expressed hope that after Ukraine implements the European Commission’s recommendations, a decision will be taken by the end of the year to start negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership.
The Lithuanian and German leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation. Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that the two countries enjoy dynamic bilateral political, economic and cultural relations. According to the President, Lithuania is ready to further expand cooperation in the automotive, laser and digitalization sectors.
