At the meeting, Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Lithuania consistently supports Armenia’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and pursue democratic reforms. The President noted that Lithuania – the first country to recognize Armenia's independence in 1991 – remembers the painful Soviet past shared by both nations. Their long-standing mutual support for each other’s struggle for self-determination and independence serves as a solid basis for consolidating bilateral relations, the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda assured the Armenian leader that Lithuania strongly supports diverse cooperation ties between Armenia and the European Union. “Lithuania firmly supports the efforts of the European Union and our transatlantic allies to strengthen Armenia’s sovereignty and resilience to external and internal threats. As EU member state, Lithuania stands ready to contribute to a lasting peace, which is vital for building a prosperous democratic future for your country,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda underscored Lithuania’s unwavering support for developing closer contacts between Armenia and the European Union via Eastern Partnership, which is a viable path towards strengthening the region’s resilience, stability and security.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Armenia also discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and its consequences for European and regional security. “Today, our continent is gripped by aggression and violence unprecedented since the Second World War. It is now more evident than ever that the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nations cannot be seen as a given,” the President said.
Later on, the two leaders will open a Lithuania-Armenia business forum, which will gather representatives from the fields of information technology, renewable energy and other business sectors.
