At the meeting, Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Lithuania fully supports Georgia’s independence, territorial integrity and continued efforts to strengthen national statehood and build a democratic and prosperous state. According to the President, Lithuania is also a committed supporter of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
The President congratulated Salome Zurabichvili on the European perspective granted to Georgia last year. “We sincerely wish that Georgia succeeds in achieving its goal of joining the European Union. The path to EU membership is neither short nor easy. It is a road of transformation that requires visible and concrete reforms for the benefit of the citizens and their well-being. We believe that the European perspective will provide your government with an additional incentive to consolidate its reform efforts,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Lithuania supports Georgia’s aspirations to strengthen cooperation with NATO and strongly supports its right to choose alliances. According to the President, external forces have no right to interfere in the decisions of other states.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Georgia also discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine and the massive consequences of this war for both European and regional security.
“Russia is determined to drag out this disastrous war and to destabilize other regions, including the South Caucasus. Political, military, financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine is vital. It is also important to impose economic sanctions against the aggressor. Measures of economic pressure undermine the aggressor’s ability to continue its imperialist wars,” the President said.
The meeting also focused on security challenges, hybrid threats and disinformation. The President pointed out that a strong democracy is created by building the resilience of society, strengthening national institutional capacities, and respecting the rule of law and political pluralism.
