Gitanas Nausėda commended the excellent development of relations between Lithuania and Poland, which were reflected not only by an intensive political partnership, but also by growing trade and investment, and the successful implementation of joint infrastructure projects of strategic importance.
The meeting with Marshal Elżbieta Witek focused on support for Ukraine, which was suffering from the devastating Russian military aggression. The President stressed that a just and sustainable peace is only possible under Ukrainian terms, with Russia withdrawing its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine. It is clear that Russia is preparing for a long and exhausting war, and it is therefore necessary to continue to provide Ukraine with economic, military and humanitarian aid. Gitanas Nausėda pointed out that he particularly valued the important contribution of Poland.
The President and the Marshal of the Sejm of Poland discussed cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in supporting Ukraine’s initiatives at the United Nations to set up a special tribunal to investigate crimes of aggression, and in seeking solutions on how to use Russia’s frozen public and private assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of the joint efforts of Lithuania and Poland to preserve Europe’s historical memory, to counter the rewriting of history and disinformation, and to raise awareness of the need for international recognition of the crimes committed by the Communist regimes.
The President stressed that he valued the cooperation between the two countries in the format of the Lublin Triangle, which is now taking on an even greater significance as part of the discussions on how to respond to common challenges.
