“Lithuania believes in Moldova’s European future and strongly supports its integration aspirations. As an EU candidate country, Moldova is firmly on the path of reform. The country also consolidates efforts of the political elite to achieve its goals on the path to European integration,” Landsbergis said, stressing that Moldova’s reforms were also important for Moldova's society itself, because they helped to strengthen its resilience to external threats.
At the meeting, Foreign Ministers also discussed the security situation in the region and challenges posed to the neighbouring countries. Landsbergis pointed out that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which had been attacked by Russia, could become one of the biggest catastrophes on the European continent. Therefore, every effort must be made to prevent this disaster.
In addition, Landsbergis highlighted the importance of solidarity and assistance to Ukraine in the context of Russia's aggression, and voiced his gratitude to the Moldovan Foreign Minister for offering a safe haven in Moldova to Ukrainians fleeing the war.
“Lithuania is ready to continue its humanitarian support for refugees in Moldova, as well as to receive and host some refugees in Lithuania,” Landsbergis said.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister welcomed the decisions of the Moldovan Government in the areas of justice, the fight against corruption and the implementation of depoliticisation of the authorities. Landsbergis ensured that the Government of Lithuania was ready to provide specific expertise needed for Moldova’s European integration, and to support the strengthening of the Moldovan public sector and reforms.
On Wednesday, Landsbergis visited Moldova together with Simon Coveney, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence of Ireland.
