The video conference was held ahead of the European Council meeting to take place in Brussels on June 23-24 and focused on granting EU candidate country status to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. EU leaders will also meet with their Western Balkan partners ahead of the European summit.
Speaking at the preparatory meeting, Gitanas Nausėda pointed out that the upcoming EU summit was of historic importance and that the decisions taken there will shape the future of Europe for decades to come. The President reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for granting candidate status to Ukraine and expressed full backing for Moldovan eurointegration aspirations.
“We have the opportunity to take a historic decision and give Ukraine the green light. To state clearly that Ukraine’s future lies within the European Union. This political message is of great importance to the Ukrainian people fighting with blood for their freedom,” the President said.
The forthcoming European Council meeting will discuss issues related to implementing sanctions against Russia and the need for further sanctions; military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine; food security and proposals for a wider European initiative; and the economic situation in the European Union.
