During the conversation, the Lithuanian President stressed that in the context of Russia’s brutal war, it was necessary to continue support for Ukraine and not to let the international focus on this issue diminish. According to the President, expressing strong political support for Ukraine by granting it the EU candidate status during the European Council in June was of utmost importance.
“Ukraine is fighting for its freedom and European values on the battlefield. The least we can do is to fully support the Ukrainian people for as long as it takes – until victory. There must be no talk of appeasement to the aggressor,” the President said.
Speaking on the preparations for the NATO Summit, Gitanas Nausėda pointed out that this was an opportunity to take decisions that would significantly enhance security in the region. According to the President, NATO’s posture must reflect the changed security environment in the Euro-Atlantic area, with the need to shift towards modern forward defense.
The Lithuanian and Polish leaders also discussed the Three Seas Initiative summit in Riga next week.
