The conversation took place at the initiative of the European Commission President following her earlier phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden.
Gitanas Nausėda and Ursula von der Leyen discussed the tense security situation in Europe, Russia’s military build-up on the Ukrainian border and in Belarus, and the need to strengthen the European Union's eastern border. The EU readiness to respond to a humanitarian crisis that could be triggered by a further escalation of the conflict was addressed separately.
During the conversation, the President underlined that successful de-escalation would depend on the unity of the EU and NATO allies, as well as on their readiness to provide full support to Ukraine.
