The leaders of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine discussed regional security and defense, energy security, and building resilience to hybrid threats such as illegal migration, cyber attacks and disinformation.
At the meeting, Gitanas Nausėda stressed that all three states were currently facing security challenges: Lithuania and Poland were experiencing a hybrid attack orchestrated by the Lukashenko regime, and we were also witnessing Russia’s military build-up on the Ukrainian border. In the face of these events, the Lithuanian President said, it is important that our countries show unity, understanding and consolidation.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that Lithuania had consistently supported and would continue to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the implementation of reforms, and aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration.
The President also underlined that Lithuania supported Ukraine’s right to freely decide on its future and foreign policy direction.
“We can see that Russia’s actions are aimed at preventing Ukraine’s further rapprochement with the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Nobody has a veto on the choices of sovereign and democratic states,” the President said. Gitanas Nausėda stressed that EU leaders shared the same position and had endorsed it at the European Council meeting.
The leaders of the Lublin Triangle also discussed energy security in the region. According to the President, it is necessary to limit the possibilities for countries to use energy resources as a geopolitical weapon and an instrument for political pressure. The Ostrovets nuclear power plant is one of such instruments for exerting pressure while the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a geopolitical project that threatens the energy security of the whole of Europe, Gitanas Nausėda said.
The leaders of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine signed a joint statement reiterating their full support for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic direction. In the trilateral statement, the three Presidents reaffirmed their clear commitment to further expanding their cooperation within the Lublin Triangle format in a wide range of areas such as security and defense, economy, energy and others.
