The President’s speech is planned on the first day of the high-level session. The President of Lithuania will address world leaders for already the third time. In his speech, Gitanas Nausėda will focus on global and regional challenges: the management of the pandemic, migration, and the rule of law. This year, Lithuania is running for a seat in two bodies of the United Nations: the Human Rights Council and the Executive Board of UNESCO.
The year 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of UN membership of Lithuania, as well as Latvia and Estonia. On this anniversary, the Presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the President of Lithuania will participate in high-level meeting on Sustainable Development Goals and in the summit of world leaders on combating the COVID-19 pandemic, called by U.S. President Joe Biden. During the days of the United Nations General Assembly, bilateral meetings of the President of Lithuania are also planned.
President Gitanas Nausėda will also take advantage of the visit to New York and use it for economic diplomacy. The program includes the President’s meetings with representatives of the U.S. companies that plan their growth in Lithuania.
It has already become a tradition for the President to meet with the Lithuanian American communities in New York and Chicago.
First Lady Diana Nausėdienė will enjoy a separate program. In New York, she will meet with Lithuanian school teachers from the East Coast of the United States. In Chicago, she will visit the Department of Lithuanian Studies at the University of Illinois and a few Lithuanian schools.
