During the discussion with the President of Iceland, the President of Lithuania drew attention to the tense situation of illegal migration on the border with Belarus and its hybrid attack against Lithuania and the EU as a whole. Gitanas Nausėda stated that Lithuania had an intent to raise the issue of amending the legislation on migration policy at the European Council in October.
“Taking into consideration the recent developments in the region, it is important to maintain and further strengthen Nordic-Baltic cooperation, especially in the areas of security and resilience to hybrid threats and propaganda,” President Nausėda said.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Iceland dedicated some time to discuss last week’s meeting of the Crimea Platform in Kyiv, the non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea, and relations with Russia in this context.
Both Presidents discussed COVID-19 pandemic management and vaccination issues. Gitanas Nausėda and Guðni Th. Jóhannesson also talked about cooperation between Lithuania and Iceland in the fields of energy, environment, health, and the fight against the pandemic.
