At the meeting, the President of Lithuania stressed that the Baltic States and Poland must take a united and principled stand towards the Belarusian regime. He pointed out that in the context of the current migration crisis and the ZAPAD 2021 military exercise, regional cooperation should be further strengthened.
The President called on the leaders of Latvia, Poland and Estonia to join efforts when speaking with the European Union institutions and to seek their increased involvement and financial support in responding to the hybrid attack by the Belarusian regime.
“I propose to jointly initiate discussions on a number of issues in Brussels, including the need to review the EU’s migration policy and legislation on the protection of external borders, as well as on the possibility of obtaining EU funding for the construction of a physical barrier along the border with Belarus,” the President said.
The declaration issued by the Presidents of four countries expresses concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus, the escalating repressions and persecution of regime opponents. The leaders of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland thank their EU partners and NATO allies for support and cooperation in tackling the illegal migration crisis.
