The Ambassador Paulauskas conveyed the greetings of the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and underlined the importance of ensuring effective multilateralism with the United Nations in the centre, as well as the implementation of the principles of international law and the rule of law enshrined in the UN Charter. Paulauskas also drew attention to the tense situation in the region and Lithuania’s aspirations to ensure regional security together with the UN leadership.
During the meeting, Paulauskas reiterated the invitation by the leaders of Lithuania to visit the country in the near future. The UN Secretary-General assured him that he was looking for an opportunity to fulfill his promise and visit the country. The UN Secretary-General's visit to Lithuania has been postponed due to the pandemic.
Within the United Nations, Lithuania pays particular attention to the protection of human rights, especially women's and children's rights, as well as to ensuring the safety of journalists and other civilians in armed conflicts. Together with other UN members, the country also participates in conflict resolution in the European region and in the UN peacekeeping missions and operations, such as the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). Lithuania cooperates closely with other countries to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, placing a strong focus on tackling climate change and developing digitalisation.
Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the UN currently chairs the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Lithuania is also a member of the UN-Women Executive Board and a candidate for the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
The UN is an international organization founded in San Francisco, the United States, on 24 October 1945. Lithuania joined the UN in 1991. There are currently 193 UN member states.
The Ambassador Paulauskas is the 7th Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN.
