A high-level conference organized by the Portuguese presidency on May 7 is dedicated to discussing Europe’s social policy priorities and consolidating them in the EU’s strategic agenda. Leaders will focus on the issues of employment, skills and social protection for EU citizens, the solution of which will help to tackle the economic consequences of the pandemic and move towards a green, digital and socially just economy.
On May 8, EU leaders will hold in an informal European Council meeting to approve the EU’s social policy priorities. They will also meet via video conference with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
The EU's united response to Russia following the events in the Czech Republic will also be discussed.
Gitanas Nausėda will highlight the threat posed to EU safety by the Ostrovets nuclear power plant, which does not comply with stress-test recommendations. He will remind the leaders about the Chernobyl disaster which happened 35 years ago. The President will present EU leaders with copies of the historical drama series “Chernobyl” filmed in Lithuania as a reminder of the consequences of disregard for safety standards in a nuclear power plant.
