The Porto Summit, organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council, will give political impetus to the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan. The Social Summit’s first event will be a high-level conference to discuss how to reinvigorate the European Social Model and put the principles of the Pillar into action to benefit EU citizens.
Parliament played an important role in preparing the Action Plan by adopting its report on “A strong social Europe for Just transitions” last year. Rapporteurs Dennis Radtke (EPP, DE) and Agnes Jongerius (S&D, NL) will present Parliament’s position on the panel on work and employment.
One of Parliament’s long-standing demands and an important element of the Action Plan, the European Child Guarantee, was published on 24 March. Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová, Chair of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, highlighted Parliament’s commitment to the proposal in her speech during the last plenary session (read also the press release for more information). She will elaborate on this position on the panel on the welfare state and social protection.
