“We value Japan as a strategic partner of Lithuania and of the whole of the European Union in the Indian-Pacific region. We strengthen our political and economic relations, cooperation in the fields of science and technology, health care, education and culture, as well as direct people-to-people contacts, and we contribute to peace and security, aiming to lift our cooperation to a new level of strategic partnership,” said Meilūnas.
Strengthening cooperation between Lithuania and Japan is among the priorities of Lithuania's diplomacy. We endeavour to diversify Lithuania's markets and to accelerate post-COVID-19 socio-economic recovery.
Lithuania and Japan have laid solid foundations in mutually beneficial cooperation. Together, we cherish the memory of Chiune Sugihara — a Japanese diplomat, who resided in Kaunas during World War II. Sugihara issued “Visas for Life” that saved thousands of Jewish lives. The diplomat has been awarded the title of the Righteous Among the Nations for his humane activities.
On 10 October 2021, the two countries will mark 30 years since the establishment of their diplomatic relations. In 2022, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Japan’s recognition of the Republic of Lithuania.
