‘It is important to share experience in controlling the spread of the virus, and to continue cooperation between all the Member States and the European Union institutions with a view to vaccinating as many Europeans as possible, as soon as possible,’ said Prime Minister Šimonytė.
On economy, it has been emphasised that the recovery will depend on the successful and rapid implementation of the European Economic Recovery Plan and the Multiannual Financial Framework. The Prime Minister has suggested exchanging experiences on the implementation of specific projects of both Governments on ensuring green and digital transformation. Lithuania’s desire to expand and strengthen economic cooperation has been expressed. Belgium’s experience in business and science cooperation is highly important.
The Prime Minister has thanked Belgium for its contribution to strengthening NATO capabilities in Lithuania. Until April 2020, Belgium’s fighter jets carried out two consecutive rotations of the air-policing mission in Lithuania. A mechanised company in NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence Battalion is expected in February 2021.
Energy security has also been discussed in the meeting, and the safety of the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant has been given a special focus. It has been stated that the European Union has to continue to put pressure on the regime of Belarus, and provide support to the people of Belarus.
The Heads of Government have agreed to intensify cooperation among the Baltic states and the Benelux Union. This year, Lithuania is chairing the Baltic Council of Ministers, while Belgium is coordinating the activities of Benelux.
