The President expressed regret that the visit to Georgia scheduled for May 26 to mark the 102nd independence anniversary was cancelled due to the pandemic.
The conversation focused on the agenda of the Eastern Partnership. The Presidents agreed that results of the summit should concentrate on motivating and ambitious long-term commitments both of the EU and of the Eastern Partnership countries. Lithuania supports Georgia’s aspirations of the Euro-Atlantic integration and calls for active implementation of the Association Agreement. The President reminded that Lithuania took an active part in shaping and implementation of the Eastern Partnership policy.
Security situation in Georgia was also touched upon. The President highlighted that in this challenging time, it was particularly important to actively monitor Russia’s actions in the region and expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict in South Ossetia and increased threat of borderization during the pandemic.
President Nausėda calls on the members of the transatlantic community to defend national security interests of the Eastern Partnership countries and enhance cooperation in areas of cyber security and hybrid threats.
Georgia’s domestic policy issues were discussed, focusing on implementation of the new initiative to amend the law on parliamentary elections. During the conversation, the Presidents shared information about the dynamics of the spread of the coronavirus in Lithuania and Georgia as well as about effective prevention measures. Lithuania provided humanitarian support to Georgia in the form of medical supplies. The President emphasized that Lithuania supported EU’s support program for the third countries to tackle the consequences of the coronavirus and expressed conviction that solidarity and unity among the EU member states and the Eastern Partnership countries would grow stronger.
