Taking the opportunity, the President extended congratulations to the President of Azerbaijan on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan announced on April 24 and expressed regret over the cancellation of the meeting of the Lithuanian-Azerbaijani Intergovernmental Cooperation Commission to strengthen bilateral relations that was scheduled on April 27 in Baku. The conference is expected to be held as soon as it is possible and the development of mutually relevant economic relations will be discussed.
The conversation focused on the EU Eastern Partnership agenda. The President emphasized that ambitious results hopefully summed up in a declaration were expected therefore motivation of the Eastern Partnership countries to achieve the European integration goals was highly important. The President reassured that Lithuania was prepared to inspire or even instill new life to the Eastern Partnership program and moderate the discussion of the Eastern Partnership countries with the European Union, in particular by sharing the integration experience with the governments of the countries seeking European integration.
The President also said that Lithuania and Azerbaijan should use the bilateral cooperation potential in information technology, transport, furniture and food industries, medicine as well as look for new opportunities in tourism and education. President Nausėda was happy to mention that Lithuania and Azerbaijan implemented as many as eleven joint projects in the framework of the EU-supported Twinning Program.
Measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as well as social and economic consequences of the pandemic were discussed during the conversation. The Presidents also presented national plans for loosening quarantine restrictions and ways to boost the economy after the crisis.
