“The EU’s ambitious objectives need adequate funding for implementation. Therefore, Lithuania supports the overall budget size proposed by the Commission. The latest proposal put forward by the European Council President is but a small step forward in negotiating a balanced decision for the whole of the European Union. We still have tough discussions ahead of us. Lithuania will continue to raise – firmly and decisively – the matter of delivering proper funding for cohesion, agricultural policy, the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant, and the Kaliningrad transit scheme. I expressed my expectations openly to the President of the European Council at our meeting this past week. I was just as determined to be heard by the President of the European Commission,” the President said.
During the meeting, Lithuania’s support for the Commission’s Green Deal and its commitment to the 2030 EU climate target were stated. Lithuania’s resolve to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and implement the green funding initiative were also expressed. It was underlined that the delivery of these commitments was directly linked to negotiating the multiannual financial framework and ensuring proper funding for cohesion and agricultural policies, which contributed in a substantial way to fighting climate change.
