“Lithuania is a strong defender of freedom of religion or belief, so we welcome the U.S.new initiative to establish the International Religious Freedom Alliance. The central element of this initiative is to step up efforts to protect freedom of religion or belief and to coordinate these worldwide efforts more effectively,” said D. Čekuolis, as he thanked the U.S. for its initiative, guidance and leadership.
On 4-6 February, numerous other events and debates on freedom of religion or belief also took place in Washington, D.C. The meetings brought together representatives of different confessions and victims of religious persecutions, who shared their stories. The National Prayer Breakfast was also held in Washington, D.C.
During his visit to Washington, D.C., Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister D. Čekuolis met with the Co-Chair of the House Baltic Caucus, Congressman John Shimkus to discuss transatlantic and bilateral cooperation, as well as regional security challenges.
The IRF Alliance aims to advance freedom of religion or belief around the world, to combat discrimination and persecution based on religion or belief.
