Lithuania's representative noted that Ukraine had undertaken a number of measures to implement the Geneva agreement of 17 of April and continued to exercise restraint in the tense situation. Despite this, Russia continuously threatens to use the force and continues to interfere in Ukraine's internal affairs. The Ambassador stressed that Lithuania firmly rejected all Russia's attempts to validate its intentions and using armed forces or sending so-called Russian "peacekeepers" into Ukraine.
Ambassador Murmokaite said that Lithuania strongly condemned the kidnapping of unarmed OSCE military verification mission observers and Ukrainian security personnel. She stressed that "all parties with an influence on the militant separatists, first and foremost Russia, must take all necessary steps to bring about the immediate release of all hostages, without any preconditions." Lithuanian ambassador reiterated the call to investigate all human rights violations, including those committed against journalists, and to hold perpetrators to account. Lithuania's representative expressed hope, that the next report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine would also cover human rights situation in Crimea that had been annexed by Russia.
In the statement Ambassador Murmokaite emphasized the political importance of the upcoming elections in Ukraine to be held on May 25 and condemned all the activities aimed at disrupting the elections.
During the meeting, Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman briefed the Council on the latest developments in Ukraine. The meeting was called on the request of the United Kingdom. The UN Security Council thoroughly follows the developments in Ukraine; at the moment it is the most frequently discussed issue on the Council's agenda.
