The Head of Government has greeted the Ambassador and Israel on the occasion of the New Year wishing all the success in 5780s.
‘We are looking forward to the formation of the new Israeli Government and hope to continue the good bilateral relationship. We value Israel as a very important partner in the region. Close ties with your country and the international Jewish community are very important to us. The excellent relations between our countries are proved by the summits of the top officials. I would like to note Prime Minister Netanyahu’s four-day historic visit to Lithuania in August 2018. And it is with pleasure that I remember my own visit to Israel last January’, said the Prime Minister.
Saulius Skvernelis has welcomed the extremely close relationship with the Lithuanian Jewish community, pointing out Government’s readiness to continue focusing on the preservation of Jewish heritage and historical memory. Commemorative plaque of the JIVO Institute (Jewish Science Institute), listing of Vilna Gaon annals in the UNESCO World Memory Register, the first Samuel Bak Museum, designation of the year 2020 as the year of the Vilna Gaon and of the history of the Jews of Lithuania – all of them are very important projects not only for us but for future generations too. According to the Head of Government, the Jewish people are an integral part of Lithuanian society, and there is great awareness in the Lithuanian society of the crimes against humanity and Lithuania’s loss during the Holocaust.
Lithuanian-Israeli diplomatic relations were established on 6 January 1992, and the Embassy of the State of Israel in Vilnius was opened up on 26 January 2015.
