According to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, the challenges of today’s world need a common and coordinated response. The overall situation in the region is not getting any better. Hybrid threats and cyber security challenges require enhanced security cooperation both regionally and internationally. The Foreign Minister also called for maintaining a unified, value-based policy towards Russia and defending a rules-based international order.
As regards the situation in Ukraine, L. Linkevičius noted that the country's new Government had a very strong mandate to carry out European integration reforms. Therefore, it is important to carry out the mandate and meet high expectations of the people.
"Our continued support and assistance to Ukraine is vital, given that progress has been made despite Russia's continued military aggression, as well as political and economic pressure," said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
Foreign Ministers adopted a joint statement on climate change. They underlined the importance of the 2019 Climate Action Summit for taking concrete steps towards raising the global level of ambition to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and to galvanize action that can limit climate change. Foreign Ministers also expressed their support for efforts to put an end to deforestation in the Amazon. The United Nations Secretary-General is convening the summit during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
