According to the President, it was important to maintain the continuity of the policy on strategic issues and effectively look for EU-wide response to new global challenges such as climate change, trade wars, migration, development of new technologies and risk management. “It is important that our regional energy and transport projects of interest to the entire EU continue, focus on the functioning of the internal market, especially in services, and further deepening of cohesion should be maintained”, the President said.
The President underlined that Lithuanian public authorities, business and academia are prepared to engage more actively in discussions in Brussels on sustainable growth and innovation.
“To develop a welfare state and high added value sectors, we must not only be actively interested in the latest scientific and innovation trends but also become a laboratory for innovative services and product development”, the President said.
Likely Brexit scenarios, the prospects of the Eastern Partnership and EU-US relations were also discussed.
“It is highly important to pursue long-term and sustainable relations with our strategic partner, i.e., the US, to set an ambitious agenda for the most advanced Eastern Partnership countries and continue the sanctions against Russia until Russia stops the aggression against Ukraine”, the President said.
The President will later meet with President-elect of the European Council Charles Michel.
