The meeting focused on cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in the European Union and the expansion of bilateral relations across economic and energy areas.
Lithuania and Poland share common priorities in the EU’s next multiannual budget. Both countries speak out against drastic cuts in cohesion support and seek to make direct payments to Lithuanian and Polish farmers reach the EU average as soon as possible. The two leaders agreed to coordinate their positions in the forthcoming negotiations on the seven-year financial framework which starts in 2021.
Lithuania and Poland see the future relationship with the United Kingdom along the same lines. The UK is a significant contributor to the defense capabilities of Baltic States and Poland. Therefore, Lithuania and Poland want the United Kingdom to remain their strong economic and security partner after Brexit.
Since many Lithuanians and Poles live and work in the UK, President Dalia Grybauskaitė Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki agreed to make every effort to protect their interests.
Among the other issues discussed at the meeting were strategic energy and transport projects. Both leaders underlined that considerable progress had been made in this field and agreed on continued cooperation in implementing the projects so that their beneficial economic effect could be felt as soon as possible not only in the countries concerned, but also by businesses and people all across the region.
