Lithuania's accession to this Convention allows Lithuanian driving license holders to drive in countries that have ratified the Geneva Convention on the Road Traffic. On 2 October 2018, the Seimas ratified the Convention, which was signed on 19 September 1949 in Geneva. Law on Ratification of the Road Traffic Convention came into force on 1 January 2019.
Lithuania ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic on 20 November 1991, but had not ratified the Geneva Convention. Consequently, the driving licenses issued in Lithuania were not valid (or could have been deemed invalid, depending on the national regulation) in countries that have only ratified the Geneva Convention, but not Vienna Convention, such as Australia, Japan, the United States, New Zealand and Thailand, among others.
The entry into force of the ratification of the Geneva Convention will lead to the recognition of driving licenses issued in Lithuania and in countries that have only ratified the Geneva Convention.
The Ministry of the Interior will establish procedures for issuing international driving licenses by the national licensing authority Regitra. International driving licenses are currently not issued in Lithuania.
