The President of Lithuania and the UK Prime Minister condemned in the strongest terms Russia's aggression in Ukraine underlining that the international community should mobilize and seek common solutions and ways out of this threatening situation.
According to the President, the developments at the EU's external borders are unjustified and may have serious consequences for the security of the whole region and for Europe's future. Therefore, it is essential to stop artificial escalation of the conflict and prevent the use of military force.
Lithuania and the United Kingdom hold the same position on planned measures at EU and NATO levels. According to the President, in this difficult situation transatlantic community should coordinate their positions and act together. The EU and NATO should send a clear message that all, including Russia, must honor and abide by international commitments.
Tomorrow, the President is convening a meeting on national and regional security issues. Participating in the meeting will be Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, Defence Minister Juozas Olekas, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chair of Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs Gediminas Kirkilas, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Petras Auštrevičius, Chair of Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs Benediktas Juodka, opposition leader Andrius Kubilius, and Chief of Defence Arvydas Pocius.
