The President and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Turkey, situation in the region, cooperation in NATO as well as developing business and tourism ties.
The President highlighted that Lithuania valued Turkey’s efforts to protect external borders of the EU and fight terrorism. It is important that NATO’s enhanced anti-terrorism measures facilitate building of joint capacities among partners of the Alliance.
As to relations with the European Union, EU-Turkey agreement on migration and efforts to curb flows of illegal migrants as well as sharing experience in the framework of the EU Twining program on border control and administrative courts was discussed.
According to the President, bilateral relations between Lithuania and Turkey are flourishing, trade grew by 60 percent and Turkey remains the most popular destination for Lithuanian tourists.
It is his first appointment to the ambassador’s position. In 1992, the Ambassador started his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he worked for embassies in Kazakhstan, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Poland. Prior to his current appointment he held the position of Deputy Director of Central Asia and Southern Caucasus Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ambassador speaks English, German and Russian.
