The President will pay a visit to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum at the end of January. The topic of the largest informal forum held for the 49th time already is Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Over 3000 political, global business, science and innovation leaders are expected to attend the event.
It is likely that in January additional meeting of the European Council will be convened in Brussels to discuss Brexit.
A visit to Poland is planned in February. The President will meet with President of Poland Andrzej Duda to discuss strengthening of strategic partnership and bilateral cooperation in security and defense. Both countries have to deal with the threats rising from the East. Lithuania and Poland dot not only share common history and traditional historical ties, but also have a shared interest to ensure regional security.
In February this year, the President is to attend the NATO Summit of the eastern flank countries, or so called the Bucharest Nine meeting, hosted in Slovakia where Baltic and central European leaders will discuss shared objectives and actions aimed at enhancing regional security.
In March, the President will attend the European Council meeting in Brussels where she and other EU leaders will address relevant EU matters. The agenda of the meeting is likely to be dominated by topics related to Brexit.
A visit to the United Nations high level meeting on women’s economic empowerment in New York is planned as well.
The President should also visit Italy and the Holy See in spring. Pope Francis extended an invitation to the President when expressing his gratitude for a warm and sincere welcome during his visit to Lithuania last September. Meetings of the President and Italian leaders are currently planned.
In May, the President will attend an informal European Council meeting to be held in the town of Sibiu in Romania which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting will deal with questions related to the future of the EU.
In June, the President will take part at the European Council meeting again which is expected to focus on the negotiations on the new EU budget for 2021-2027.
A visit to Japan is also expected where a meeting of women political leaders will be hosted. Meetings with the Japanese leaders are currently planned.
Other presidential visits are still in the process of planning.
