The conflict in Syria has not only posed a threat to the region's stability for the past two years, but it has also had a terrible human cost. By January 2014, 9.3 million Syrians were in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the European Commission. The EU has been deeply concerned about the situation since the start. The EU and the members states are the region's largest donor, having allocated more than €2.6 billion in funding to help relieve the humanitarian crisis in Syria. By January 2014 there were 6.5 million Syrians internally displaced and 2.4 million refugees registered and waiting to be registered in neighbouring countries.
