In accordance with the Resolution of the UN Security Council, the European Union operation may last up to 6 months. The European Union operation will coordinate actions with the African Union-led peacekeeping mission in the CAR (MISCA) and France's operation Sangaris, which was launched in a bid to stop the sectarian violence in the Central African Republic.
The resolution also provides for restrictive measures targeting persons responsible for instigating the conflict, breaching human rights and international humanitarian law, violence, obstruction of the democratic process in the Central African Republic. The document recalled the need for BINUCA to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance in coordination with all humanitarian actors, to help the government restore its control over the territory of the country and achieve effective restoration of constitutional order.
More than 1,000 people were killed in clashes in the Central African Republic since the outbreak of the crisis in December 2013. Hundreds of thousands more are forced to leave their homes. Responding to the difficult humanitarian situation in the country,
Lithuania committed 70 thousand Litas in food aid to the Central African Republic. Lithuania also plans to contribute a cargo plane Spartan and its crew made up of about 10 people to the operation in the Central African Republic. They will provide logistical assistance to the French troops.
