The consultative group proposes to the President the selection of mandate-holders, a list of candidates who possess the highest qualifications for the mandates in question and meet the general criteria and particular requirements. On the basis of the recommendations of the consultative group, the President of the Council identifies an appropriate candidate for each vacancy.
In 2014, the consultative group will consider 27 candidates and nominate the UN independent experts on the Central African Republic, Somalia, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, the Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, etc.
Besides the Lithuanian Ambassador, who represents the Eastern European Group, the consultative group will include Permanent Representatives of Canada, Morocco, Peru, and South Korea.
The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva is made up of 47 State representatives and is tasked with strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe by addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them, including responding to human rights emergencies.
