"Lithuania‘s exports to Uzbekistan are steadily growing, but cooperation is limited to just a few sectors. We need to deepen our cooperation and expand our ties. Lithuania has a well-developed transport infrastructure, so it could be the gateway for Uzbekistan's goods to the EU market," the Minister Linkevičius said.
In the meetings with Uzbekistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov, the Ministers of Foreign Trade and Agriculture, and other officials, it was agreed besides agreements in the fields of economy, tourism and agriculture to revive the work of the intergovernmental commission. Its meeting should take place in late 2018 in Tashkent.
Linkevičius was accompanied by Lithuania‘s business delegation, representing the logistics, education, agriculture and metallurgy sectors. In cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, the Lithuania-Uzbekistan business roundtable's meeting was held.
Due to wide-ranging reforms introduced by the new President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country‘s economy is being rapidly liberalized, which now draws more attention of Lithuanian businesses.
This is the Lithuanian Foreign Minister‘s first visit to Uzbekistan. Lithuania and Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations on 5 August 1992. The Embassy of Lithuania in Moscow is accredited to Uzbekistan, while the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Riga is accredited to Lithuania.
