The President and the newly appointed Ambassador discussed growing importance of bilateral relations and increasing economic cooperation between Lithuania and China.
China is the largest Lithuania’s trade partner in Asia. In 2017, Lithuania’s export to China increased by 46 percent and accounted for 180 million euros while bilateral trade reached one billion euros. Agriculture and food products, financial technologies, biotechnologies and lasers are the most promising sectors for economic cooperation between Lithuania and China. At present, several Lithuanian laser companies successfully cooperate with Chinese partners.
The President and the newly appointed Ambassador also discussed bilateral relations in the areas of education and student exchange. The number of Chinese students studying in Lithuania grows on an annual basis: 104 Chinese students study in Lithuania now.
Over the last five years, the number of Chinese tourists to Lithuania has doubled. Last year alone, some 14 thousand Chinese visited Lithuania.
The Diplomat began his career in 1983 and served at the embassies in Botswana and Zambia. Later, he assumed different positions at the China Disabled Persons’ Federation. In 2010, he was appointed as Ambassador to Croatia. From the beginning of 2018, he has been serving as Ambassador to Lithuania. Shen Zhifei is the tenth Chinese Ambassador to Lithuania.
Lithuania and China established diplomatic relations on 14 September 1991.
