The planned summit demonstrates the strength of U.S.-Baltic ties and close collaborative relationship between Lithuania and the United States. According to the President, the meeting held at the highest level in the centennial year of Lithuania's restored independence will consolidate strategic partnership with the United States and define further cooperation guidelines.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė together with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis and U.S. President Donald Trump will discuss the most pressing regional and transatlantic issues.
The meeting will also focus on defense, energy security and business contacts.
Preparations for the upcoming NATO summit aimed at further reforming allied defense and strengthening the Eastern flank will be on the agenda in Washington.
The United States is Lithuania’s strategic partner in the areas of military and energy security. Lithuanian and American soldiers help to ensure, bilaterally, the security of the Baltic states and Poland across the region. The U.S. has increased funding for the European Deterrence Initiative by one third. Resources will also go to strengthen Lithuania's defense.
Lithuania was among the first countries to start importing liquefied gas from the United States via the Klaipėda LNG terminal. Currently eight European countries buy American gas - which diversifies their energy supplies and reduces Europe’s dependence on Gazprom.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with President Donald Trump in 2017 in Brussels and Warsaw. Last year, the three Baltic presidents also met with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in Munich and Tallinn.
