EU foreign ministers also discussed future prospects for the Western Balkan countries on the path towards European integration. The debate took place after the European Commission adopted a strategy for ‘A credible enlargement perspective for and enhanced EU engagement with the Western Balkans’ in early February.
“The strategy that was adopted by the Commission regarding the Western Balkans sends an important political signal not only to the countries of the region, but also to other European countries with European aspirations,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister.
Germanas also emphasized that on the road to Europe each country’s efforts were assessed on a case-by-case basis, bearing in mind the respect for common EU values and a clear direction. According to Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister, there can be no pre-set dates for EU membership in this process. Other EU foreign ministers also shared this opinion. In addition, they held working sessions on Syria and North Korea.
