High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton travels to Ukraine on 10th of December to hold talks with President Yanukovych, officials and opposition, as well as with representatives of the civil society to support efforts in finding a political solution to the current crisis in the country and to create a background for talks with the opposition.

Mass demonstrations in Kiev were started because of the decision of Ukrainian government to suspend preparations to sign the Association Agreement. That proves that citizens of Ukraine support closer integration with the EU.

The two-day visit was announced by the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso after a conversation with President Victor Yanukovych on 8th of December. European Commission says the EU's offer of an association agreement with Ukraine remains on the table but conditions have to be met and cannot be renegotiated.

Viktor Yanukovych is holding a meeting with three former Ukrainian presidents in Kyiv on December 10th as well.
