The Act of Independence of February 16 that has reached Lithuania on 17 January was presented to the foreign ambassadors. The President expressed gratitude to Germany that preserved the historic document and to all the countries that supported Lithuania‘s independence in the most difficult times, did not acknowledge its occupation and now contribute to ensuring its national security.
The Centennial of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania has more than a symbolic meaning, as it is an opportunity to enhance relationship with the neighboring countries and global partners. This year, the highest foreign heads of state plan over twenty visits to Lithuania. This demonstrates that Lithuania has many friends and partners all over the world that trust it and share efforts with Lithuania in enhancing national and international security and prosperity.
This year is special to Lithuania because it is about to finish the negotiation on the membership in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Lithuania enjoys substantial achievements in implementing reforms for the membership in the OECD and national economic well-being and is prepared to finalize the accession process as soon as possible. The membership in the organization uniting the strongest economies means an opportunity to contribute to global progress and to achieve benefit for Lithuania. It will promote growth of national economy, competitiveness and will open the way for new investments.
In June, the Women Political Leaders Global Forum will be held in Vilnius. This is Lithuania’s contribution to global efforts to improve the situation related to women’s rights, combat inequality and violence against women.
Lithuania meets the Centennial of the Restoration of the State with real guarantees of collective defense. NATO’s multinational battalions in Lithuania joined by as many as 23 countries of the Alliance, ensure a reliable deterrence. However, according to the President, threats to security remain; therefore, the protection of the entire NATO territory along its eastern border will remain one of the most important priorities. This year, at the NATO summit, Lithuania and its Allies will strive to achieve additional security measures, faster decision-making process in NATO as well as its headquarters’ reform.
Lithuania also contributes to the global efforts in fighting terrorism and takes part in the international peace keeping missions.
