Lithuania also participates in the NATO-led multinational operation in Afghanistan, Resolute Support, an effort to help train the Afghan National Security Forces. Lithuania plans retaining 29 soldiers in the operation and to look into the possibilities to increase the contribution with regard to the allies’ needs and the security situation. The current Lithuanian contingent in Herat and Kabul, Afghanistan, of 29 soldiers will be replaced by a new rotation in a short while. The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania had authorised deployment of up to 50 soldiers to Operation Resolute Support.
Launched in 2015, Operation Resolute Support is NATO Alliance’s effort to train and assist the Afghan National Security Forces and some of the country’s ministries. The mission replaced the over a decade-long combat International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) mission.
