The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has allocated EUR 40,000 in humanitarian aid to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help Iraq. Another EUR 20,000 will be channelled through the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
The Iraqi people suffer, as the country faces a prolonged, worsening humanitarian situation due to the ongoing intensive military operations. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that USD 930 million would be needed to reach the people of Iraq in 2017.
The United Nations confirmed that as many as 11 million people in Iraq required humanitarian aid, 10.3 million people required health care, 8.3 million water and sanitation, and 2.9 million people were food insecure. There are currently 3.1 million internally displaced persons, out of which 1.2 million people are staying in temporary settlements. Approximately 1.5 million people are returning to Iraq. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Iraq takes care of the refugees and provides emergency assistance to internally displaced persons.
The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) was established in 2006 to deliver rapid humanitarian assistance to people affected by natural disasters and armed conflict.
