In 1981, the General Assembly of the United Nations stated, that the first day of the working session (third Tuesday in September) will be "officially recognized as International Day of peace in order to support the idea of peaceful coexistence among peoples and nations". In September 2001 the General Assembly decided that from 2002, the International Day of Peace is to be celebrated annually on 21 of September.
This celebration has to draw everyone's attention that peace has to be honoured. The United Nations is willing that the 21 of September will be celebrated as the day of global cease-fire and non-violence. The celebrations of this day should be an incentive for all countries to refrain from any act of hostility. In addition, the General Assembly, invited all the member states of the UN and some regional and global non-governmental organisations to commemorate this Day and to cooperate with the UN in order to implement global cease-fire.
