The aim of the visit is to get acquainted with the region’s security situation, Lithuania’s readiness to deal with threats, the implementation of NATO’s decision in Lithuania, and other topical issues related to security and defence policy.
Linkevičius discussed security challenges facing the country and the Baltic region, and presented Lithuania’s security policy priorities. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed Lithuania’s strong commitment to strengthen security and defence, as well as to boost public resilience.
“Lithuania’s solidarity with its allies remains one of our essential principles,” stressed Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, when speaking about Lithuania’s contribution to the fight against threats from the south and participation in international missions and operations.
As regards the security situation in the region, Linkevičius also recalled the complex situation in Ukraine and Russia’s role in the conflict. “We cannot forget who is escalating the conflict. Lithuania strives to have the best possible relations with its neighbours, including Russia. However, these relations must be based on mutual respect, the observance of international law and international obligations. We need to maintain a strong, consistent stance towards Russia and to continue to provide full support for Ukraine,” said Linkevičius.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister expressed his satisfaction with the smooth implementation of the decision to establish NATO’s forward presence in the Baltic states and Poland. “Lithuania is grateful and highly appreciates the contribution of the allies to the implementation of this decision – this is proof that NATO’s commitment to collective defence is unshakable,” said Linkevičius.
The meeting also discussed initiatives to strengthen European security. There was a consensus that the European countries should invest more into their own security and strengthen their defence capabilities. The cooperation between the EU and NATO is significant in this context. However, both organizations should complement rather than duplicate each other.
During the visit to Lithuania, the members of the delegation met with the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė. The delegation will also meet with members of the Committee on National Security and Defence and of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas (Parliament), and of the Seimas Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the Minister of National Defence and the Chief of Defence, and will visit NATO’s enhanced forward presence battalion in Rukla.
