The EU Election Observation Mission headed by MEP Tamás Meszerics has been able to play a positive role in support of this democratic process. The EOM reported observing a peaceful, generally well administered and transparent vote after a competitive and inclusive campaign. The EOM highlighted how Ghana could now build on these achievements to further improve its election framework.
In line with the Accra Declaration of 1 December signed by all presidential candidates, the EU calls on all the political parties and electoral stakeholders to continue to act lawfully to preserve peace in the country, accept the results and resolve any election dispute through dialogue and available legal remedies.
The European Union has been a close partner of Ghana and observed elections for the third consecutive time after 2008 and 2012. This reflects the EU's long-term commitment to supporting democracy, peace and stability in the country.
The EU Election Observation Mission will remain in the country until completion of the electoral process and will issue a final report with recommendations within two months.
The report can provide a valuable contribution to possible future electoral governance reform according to the wishes of all relevant stakeholders.
